Dan Korte - Founder, RISEABOVE  @dan_korte

My life would change forever when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer back in 2008. This event led me down a very dark path in life where I was full of hatred and self pity. I remember waking up out of surgery and the first words out of my mouth were “did they take it?” When I heard the answer I was so angry and upset. I told everyone that I had hernia surgery because I was embarrassed to tell everyone the real story. It took me a few years to become comfortable with who I was.

Fast forward to 2012, I had the idea to create a non-profit testicular cancer foundation called “RISEABOVE”. I wanted to give back because I had gotten a second chance at life. In 2013, I found out that my hematologist oncologist was accused of prescribing chemotherapy drugs to healthy individuals and submitting many fraudulent claims to Medicare. This made me question many things in life, but thankfully I was not a victim of this evil. It wasn’t until many years later that I realized that I had to go through these events in order to build RISEABOVE.

In 2017, I met a woman that would change my life forever. I told her about my idea at a coffee shop that I wanted to create an athletic apparel company around individuals who have gone through tragedies and struggles in life. She immediately related to the idea and pushed me to get it off the ground. I started getting the idea out there with her help and immediately knew we were onto something life changing.

Riseabove to me is being free and finally letting go of all the baggage I used to let hold me down in life. I will no longer deprive myself from being who I truly aspire to be. Life unexpectedly threw really heavy rocks my way and some hurt me really bad to the point of decapacitating myself mentally, physically, and emotionally. Through hard work, I have learned to overcome depression. While I am still learning, I do my best to overcome my anxiety. While I get through most days successfully, I am human and have my moments where my days are very tough. I have managed to overcome mental disabilities that manifested through physical pain. Although I have scars that are visible, some scars will never be seen because they are a result of emotional and mental struggles. With everything that has happened to me on my journey through life, I am proud of my brokenness. I am proud of my imperfect self. Despite all of the tragedies and struggles, I Riseabove everyday knowing that I am a fighter and that I am not alone. It’s time that we embrace the good and broken in all of us and Riseabove to our happiness.

When I first heard about Riseabove, I immediately fell in love with the idea. The message behind it is what separates this clothing brand from all of the other athletic apparel brands. Many of us have faced similar struggles in life and found our recovery through the gym. My whole life I’ve been battling against anxiety and one way I have found to reduce this stress is through physical exercise. Meeting other like minded individuals at the gym with struggles that share a passion for physical exercise has been very motivating. The second reason why I knew I had to be a part of this amazing movement is because it is based and made in Detroit. I moved here 6 years ago and immediately fell in love with the city. I love to show how beautiful this city is through my pictures and videos. Detroit is slowly becoming the once beautiful and powerful city it used to be and I believe Riseabove is going to play a vital role in this. Riseabove is not just a gym clothing brand; it’s a whole community of individuals who have recovered from their struggles through fitness.
